Your Guide to Christening Card messages from Godparents, friends and relatives.

If you’re looking for a little help and inspiration with what to write in a christening card from godparents or if you’re a friend/relative, then look no further! Choosing a unique message can feel a little overwhelming so we’ve made a few suggestions which we hope will help.

Before you decide on what to write, there are two main factors to consider. Firstly, your relationship to the child, are you the godparent, relative or friend?  Following on from this, who you want to address the card to – namely the child or the parents.

Relationship to the child

What you write will be dependent on your relationship to the child:

You are the Godmother / Godfather / Godparents

Being asked to be the godparent is a real honour and a very important role in a christening.  As part of your role, you make promises to the child (see our article on what does a Godparent do). As such, you can tailor your message in the card to the promises you make, such as your commitment to guide and offer you love and support throughout the child’s journey in life. We’d suggest writing the card directly to the child (see our ideas below)

You are the Grandparents

Grandparents can offer such an important role in the lives of their grandchildren. If you are looking for some inspiration on what to write in a christening card from grandparents, then I’ve come up with a separate post with ideas specifically related to being a grandparent.  Take a look at that articles here: Christening messages from Grandparents’

You are relatives or friends

You can address the card to either the parents and /or the child depending on your relationship. Messages to the parents include congratulations and well wishes for all the family. You can include the challenges and joys of parenthood, expressing positivity and hope for the future and the child’s journey through life. In addressing it to the child, be more specific wishing them a life filled with love, adventure, joy, happiness.

Christening Messages – more ideas:

In addition to the messages above, we’ve also included some more ideas and words to help create a message which resonates with you. To further personalise your message, you could add details of a special memory you’ve had with the family or child. For a more religious sentiment, you could add a quote or blessing which might be read at the christening which further personalises the card to the occasion.

I hope this has helped with some ideas and inspiration with what to write in a christening card from godparents, friends and family.  The most important thing is to write something which reflects you, has meaning and is from the heart. A simple, honest, genuine message will mean a lot!
