Why do we have Christmas Trees?
The Christmas tree is a tradition that many families partake in during the holiday season. But where did this tradition come from and who started it?
There are many different stories about how the Christmas tree tradition began. One story says that Saint Boniface, an English missionary, was trying to convert people to Christianity in the 8th century. He came across a group of Pagans who were worshipping an oak tree. Boniface cut down the tree and replaced it with a small fir tree, which he decorated with candles to represent the stars in the sky.
Another story says that Martin Luther, a German monk, was walking through the forest one day and saw all of the trees covered in snow. He was inspired to bring a tree inside his home and decorate it with candles and ornaments.
Whichever story is true, we know that the Christmas tree tradition began in Germany and spread to other parts of Europe before coming to America. The first recorded instance of a Christmas tree in America was in 1851, when Pennsylvania family decorated a small pine tree with apples, nuts, and candles.
Over the years, the tradition of decorating Christmas trees has evolved. Today, we typically use ornaments made of ceramic, glass, metal, and plastic. There are also many different types of trees that can be used for a Christmas tree, including fir, spruce, pine, and artificial trees.
