Naming Day Celebration

What is a Naming Day Celebration?

Whilst the name of the baby is officially recorded at your local Register Office, this is often done by just the parents and involves some paperwork.  As a result, many parents want to have more of a celebration with friends and family to welcome the new arrival.  Two of the main options are a christening / baptism or a Naming Day Ceremony.  For our handy summary of both these options take a look at our ‘Christening or Naming Ceremony‘ post.

If you’ve reached the decision that a religious event is not for you then you’re on your way to a Naming Day celebration.

What needs organising?

Organising an event is stressful at the best of times.  Furthermore, when you combine this with caring for a young child and also trying to feed and water just about everyone you know…it’s daunting.  For that reason, a little help is at hand.  We’ve put together a simple Naming Day celebration checklist for you.  Whilst it might not answer everything, we hope it reduces the stress just that little bit.

  • Celebrant

Are you going to hire a celebrant?  This is someone to undertake the service (such as a registrar from the local council or someone from the British Humanist Association).  Alternatively, you could run the service yourself or ask a confident friend / family member to do it?

  • Invitations

How many people would you like to invite?  Do you want a large or intimate celebration?  This will affect your next step – the venue…

  • Venue

Will you have the ceremony at your house or hire a venue?  If it’s the summer months then you can spill outside but what if the weather turns or it’s the colder winter months?  What about decorations e.g. bunting, balloons, flowers etc

  • Mentors

Will you ask any friends or family members to be ‘mentors’ or ‘supporting adults’ for your child.

  • Baby Outfit

Will you opt for a family ‘gown’  (you could still use a  family christening gown) or smart dress?

  • The Service

Will you have readings, if so which ones and will you ask friends/family and older siblings to be involved and read them?

  • Catering

Will you cater yourself or perhaps you could look for local suppliers in your area.

  • A Cake

Will you have a special cake for the celebration?

  • Record the Celebration

You could buy a guest book or buy a large photo frame and ask people to write on the mount then frame a photo from your special day.  Can you ask friends and family to take some photo’s to ensure you have some with all the immediate family together.

  • Activities for the Kids

Chances are, there may be lots of other children attending.  To ensure a smooth and stress limiting day, have some activities for the children.  This could include colouring activities, party organisers (balloon artists) etc

“Naming day celebrations are becoming increasingly popular. No one feels left out and everyone can simply enjoy the gift of a new baby in their lives”
